Shaun started working with Janlu in August 2025, at a time when things could easily have gone the other way. After a knee injury and a tough fall attempting a homemade jump, which resulted in a hospital visit and six weeks off the bike, Janlu’s confidence had taken a real knock. His skills were average, but more importantly, his belief in himself was low
From the very first session, Shaun did more than just coach technique. Yes, he took Janlu through his Skills 101 foundation, but what truly stood out was his ability to connect with Janlu’s bigger picture – his hopes of one day competing in downhill races. Shaun understood that this journey would require not only skill development, but a careful rebuilding of confidence. And so the weekend sessions began.
Over time, not only did Janlu’s riding improve, but a strong and trusting coach–student relationship developed. Shaun’s approach is patient, intentional, and deeply invested – he doesn’t just coach the rider, he builds the person.
Fast forward to this past weekend: Janlu completed his third downhill race of the season. While there is still room to grow, the progress has been incredible to witness. His skills have improved significantly, but even more importantly, his confidence – both on the bike and in himself – has grown in ways we once weren’t sure would be possible.
What makes Shaun exceptional is that his support extends far beyond scheduled sessions. He shows up – often without being asked – to support Janlu at races, and he is always available to answer the many (and I mean many!) questions with patience and genuine care.
We are incredibly grateful for Shaun. The impact he has had on Janlu goes far beyond mountain biking – he has helped a young boy who once doubted himself start to believe… and now, he’s flying, …. The most incredible part? It has only been 8 months
